Assemble the Bear's Paw Block

Each unit in the Bear's Paw requires just 2 prints, one for the background (tone on tone beige) and one for the bear's paw (green, red, blue, brown, back or gold- fall colors).  For ease in assembly, group the tone on tone beige pieces into sets of four triangles and one 2 1/2" square of the same color for the background.  Then  group the fall color pieces into sets of four traingles and one 4 1/2 inch square of the same color for the bear's paw.

1. Select one set of background pieces and one set of bear's paw pieces.

2.  Join one background triangle (geige)  and one bear's paw triangle (fall color) to make a triangle-square.  Press seam allowance toward the darker fabric.  The pieced triangle square should measure 2 1/2 inches.  Repeat to make a total of four matching triangle-squares.  (diagram 1)

3.  Refering to diagram 2, lay out the four triangle-squares, the background 2 1/2" square, and the bear's
paw 4 1/2" square.  Sew together the pieces in sections.  Then join the sections to make a Bear's Paw unit.  The pieced unit should measure 6 1/2 inches square, including seam allowance.

4.  Repeat steps 1 through 3 to make a total of four Bear's Paw units.

5.  Referring to diagram 3 for placement sew together four Bear's Paw units of different colors in pairs.  Press seam allowances in opposite directions.  Then join pairs to make a Bear's Paw block.  Press the seam allowance in one direction.  The pieced Bear's Paw block should measure 12 1/2 inches, including seam allowances.
